VanWey threw a scoreless inning, striking out two over the weekend. However, the Astros are set to bring Josh Hader (biceps) back off the injured list on Tuesday, so this frees up a spot for them to do that.

VanWey provides Houston’s bullpen with some additional depth heading into the final two games of a series against the division-rival Rangers. The 27-year-old has tossed a pair of scoreless frames in two appearances for the Astros this season. He’ll operate in middle relief situations.

VanWey, who was called up on Friday, pitched two scoreless innings with three strikeouts in his two appearances over the weekend.

He takes the spot of Jason Alexander, who was sent down Thursday. VanWey made nine appearances for the Astros last season, amassing a 5.06 ERA in 10 2/3 innings. He’d opened this year with a 5.74 ERA in 15 relief appearances with Sugar Land.

The Astros already have an open spot on their active roster after optioning Jason Alexander to Triple-A following Wednesday’s ballgame. VanWey, 27, posted an underwhelming 5.74 ERA, 1.53 WHIP and a 19/6 K/BB ratio over 15 2/3 innings in his first 15 appearances out of the bullpen at Triple-A Sugar Land this season.

VanWey and Trammell were both removed from the 40-man roster last week. They could both spend time in the majors in 2026, but in order to do so they’ll need to be added back to Houston’s — or another team’s — 40-man.

VanWey has been shipped out to make room for J.P. France to be called up to pitch in relief. The 26-year-old rookie has posted a respectable 5.06 ERA across 10 2/3 innings over nine appearances at the big-league level this season.

With Colton Gordon getting optioned out to Triple-A on Saturday, VanWey will take his place and add a fresh arm to the bullpen for the time being. The 26-year-old right-hander holds a 5.59 ERA, 1.86 WHIP and a 6/3 K/BB ratio across 9 2/3 innings with the Astros this season.

VanWey has made eight appearances for the Astros this season, posting a 5.59 ERA, 1.86 WHIP and a 6/3 K/BB ratio over 9 2/3 innings. He’ll probably get another opportunity to work out of the big league bullpen before the regular season is through.

VanWey, 26, gets the nod to replace Tayler Scott on the active roster with Scott designated for assignment. VanWey provides middle-inning depth while he’s with the club.
