Lou Merloni (inflammed right elbow) started a rehab assignment at Class A Mohoning Valley last night.
With the Indians out of the playoff hunt, there is a good chance that Merloni will not be activated before September 1st.

Lou Merloni (right elbow inflammation) took batting practice yesterday and is on target to return to action this Wednesday.
Merloni, who also did some light throwing for the second day in a row, will be re-evaluated tomorrow after taking infield practice today.

The A’s are interested in free-agent infielder Lou Merloni.
“They’ve been there since Day One,” said Merloni, “but all things being equal, and if the opportunity is still there, I’d like come back to Cleveland.” The Indians only seem interested in re-signing Merloni to a minor league contract.

More rumors of middle infielders going to the Red Sox. The San Diego Union-Tribune says Boston would like to bring back Lou Merloni.
In fact, the paper says a deal could be done today involving a minor league infielder headed to the Padres, who could activate Keith Lockhart from the DL to replace Merloni.

Indians optioned infielder Lou Merloni to Triple-A Buffalo.
Merloni never made much sense for the Indians, as there was no left-handed-hitting infielder for him to platoon with. He went 4-for-19 in 3 1/2 weeks on Cleveland’s bench.
  • ATH 2nd Baseman
Indians activated infielder Lou Merloni from the 15-day disabled list.
Merloni remains troubled by a sore throwing elbow, so he might be limited to pinch-hitting duties for now. Maybe he could still start at first base against lefties, but the Indians are probably better off going with Josh Phelps.

Still troubled by a sore elbow, Lou Merloni has left Single-A Mahoning Valley.
“I can swing the bat fine, but I feel discomfort on some throws,” Merloni said. He still could be activated on Sept. 1.
  • ATH 2nd Baseman
Indians sent infielder Lou Merloni and catcher Tim Laker outright to Triple-A Buffalo.
Both players opted for free agency. The Indians will attempt to re-sign Merloni to a minor league deal. Laker will only be back if he wants to play for Buffalo.

Lou Merloni (ankle) will be recalled from rehab today but will not be activated.
If he can hit and field without pain he may be activated and see a few innings this season.
  • ATH 2nd Baseman
Angels signed infielder Lou Merloni to a minor league contract and invited him to spring training.
Merloni was expected back with Cleveland until the Alex Cora signing. Anaheim should keep him as a reserve infielder, allowing Maicer Izturis to play regularly in Triple-A. He can compete with Robb Quinlan for the job as Dallas McPherson’s platoon partner at third base.
