Garcia, 22, was a waiver claim from the Phillies in September. He was viewed as one of that organization’s better prospects a year ago, but he hit just .168/.319/.264 in high-A. He’ll have to accept the assignment and remain with the organization.

García will report to Double-A Erie. The 21-year-old infielder was designated for assignment last week by the Phillies after hitting .167/.316/.253 with three homers, 11 RBI and five stolen bases in 55 games this season in the lower minors.

The Phillies needed to free up a spot on the 40-man roster and it looks as though García was the odd-man out. The 21-year-old has hit just .167/.316/.253 with three homers, 11 RBI and five stolen bases in 55 games in the low-level minors this season. There’s a strong chance that he passes through waivers unclaimed and continues to function as minor league infield depth for the Phillies.

García has been added to the Phillies’ 40-man roster and will be protected from selection in next month’s Rule 5 Draft. The 21-year-old infielder slashed .243/.353/.411 over 391 at-bats this season between Low-A Clearwater and High-A Jersey Shore.

Garcia drove in three runs to go along with the pair of roundtrippers. The 20-year-old has gone deep four times in 47 games for the Threshers, as power is not Garcia’s calling card, but he is capable of turning on pitches in the middle of the plate. Signed back in 2017 in the loaded IFA class that also featured Wander Franco, Garcia has plus speed and makes enough hard contact to suggest a decent hit tool, as well. He’s a strong defender up the middle with a strong throwing arm, and he should be able to stay at shortstop with the ability to play second or third, as well. There’s some work to be done with Garcia, but he could help the Phillies -- and potentially fantasy managers -- by the end of 2023.
