Cubs signed LHP Luke Hagerty to a minor league contract.
Well, this is a fun story. Hagerty was a first-round pick of the Cubs all the way back in 2002 but hasn’t thrown a pitch in organized ball since 2008 after developing the yips. However, he recently had a workout where he was clocked at 99 mph and the Cubs decided to give him another shot. He’ll turn 38 in April and is obviously a long shot, but Hagerty will be an interesting guy to follow this spring.

Left-hander Luke Hagerty, taken between the first and second rounds of last year’s amateur draft, may be headed for elbow surgery.
The Cubs say Hagerty felt something ''pop’’ in his elbow in the final days of spring training - never an encouraging sign.

Marlins acquired LHP Luke Hagerty from the Orioles for a player to be named following the conclusion of the Rule 5 draft.
Hagerty doesn’t seem any more likely to stick in Florida than he did in Baltimore. That last year’s really bad teams hope to get back into contention this year took quite a toll on today’s Rule 5 draft.

Orioles selected LHP Luke Hagerty from the Cubs with the sixth selection of the Rule 5 draft.
Hagerty, a 2002 first-round pick, pitched just 22 2/3 IP after coming back from Tommy John surgery. He’s viewed as a potential No. 2 starter and immediately becomes one of Baltimore’s best prospects, but the Orioles may not want to keep him in the majors all season. It would be easier for them if they’re able to stash him away on the DL.

Rule 5 pick Luke Hagerty is very unlikely to make Florida’s Opening Day roster.
He hasn’t pitched for weeks since a bout of control problems early in camp. Unless Florida places him on the DL, he could be headed back to Chicago.

Marlins returned Rule 5 LHP Luke Hagerty to the Cubs.
The Cubs aren’t going to get Andrew Sisco back, but at least they did recover one of the two pitchers they lost in the Rule 5 draft. Hagerty was troubled by finger problems during camp, and the budget-conscious Marlins didn’t think it was worth stashing him away on the disabled list.

Rule 5 pick Luke Hagerty made his first appearance in an ‘A’ game today and pitched a hitless inning against the Orioles.
He walked one. The Marlins might not have room for Hagerty in their pen, but if the left-hander shows a consistent 93-95 mph fastball this spring, we won’t like the Cubs’ chances of getting him back.

Luke Hagerty gave up five runs in 1 2/3 innings for short-season Single-A Boise yesterday in his season debut.
Hagerty, who spent spring training with the Marlins after being taken in the Rule 5 draft, is struggling to return from Tommy John surgery. He’s pitched only about 70 innings since the Cubs made him a first-round pick in 2002.

Luke Hagerty, coming back from Tommy John surgery, struck out four in 2 2/3 scoreless innings for the Rookie AZL Cubs yesterday.
Hagerty, a first-round pick in 2002, was making his first appearance since 2002. Now that he’s healthy, he should begin to reemerge as one of the Cubs’ top pitching prospects.
