Dermody

Dermody was designated for assignment by the Red Sox last week after allowing three runs on four hits over four innings in a spot start against the Guardians. The 32-year-old will now try his luck on the open market.

Dermody was lit up by the Guardians last Thursday in a spot start for the Red Sox and was immediately designated for assignment following the contest. His social media posts from a few years ago, and subsequent clarification to reporters last week, certainly didn’t help matters. He’ll presumably head back to Triple-A Worcester for now.

Dermody allowed three runs on four hits, including a pair of José Ramírez round-trippers, over four innings on Thursday in a lackluster spot start against the Guardians before being jettisoned from Boston’s 40-man roster to make room for Adam Duvall’s impending return for Friday’s series opener against the Yankees. It’s highly unlikely he’ll garner any interest on waivers.

He took the loss. Dermody allowed a pair of blasts to José Ramírez and escaped the fourth inning after a leadoff single. Corey Kluber came on in relief. We’re not sure if Dermody will make another start yet, but he’s not really on the fantasy radar.

The 32-year-old hurler has made 30 appearances at the big league level in his career, but Thursday’s outing against the Guardians will be his first start. He has done a decent job at Triple-A Worcester this season -- compiling a 4.50 ERA, 1.34 WHIP and a 47/9 K/BB ratio over 44 frames. He isn’t a recommended streaming option on Thursday.

Nothing official from the Red Sox yet, but Dermody is with the club in Cleveland and has a locker in Boston’s clubhouse. The 32-year-old left signed a minor league contract back in January and has made 30 career relief appearances in the majors since 2016. He’s not a recommended option for fantasy managers.

Dermody was doing a great job in Red Sox camp, pitching 8 1/3 scoreless innings with a 10/0 K/BB ratio. The 32-year-old, who has spent time in both Japan and Korea, should be a part of the Triple-A rotation.

The 32-year-old southpaw has made just two appearances in the big leagues since the 2017 season. He finished the 2022 season in Korea where he registered a 4.54 ERA, 1.39 WHIP and a 37/13 K/BB ratio over 39 2/3 innings with the NC Dinos of the Korea Baseball Organization. He’ll compete for a spot in the Red Sox’ Opening Day bullpen.

Dermody made it back to the majors last week with the Cubs and has been granted his release to finish the year overseas in Korea. The 32-year-old lefty has made 30 relief appearances in the majors since 2016.

It’s an extra bullpen arm for manager David Ross. Dermody signed a minor league contract with Chicago over the winter and has registered a 3.74 ERA and 70/18 K/BB ratio in 79 1/3 innings this season at Triple-A Iowa.
