Dermody

Dermody spent the 2021 season in Japan after previously being a member of the Cubs organization. In 29 MLB appearances, the 31-year-old southpaw has a 5.13 ERA over three partial campaigns. He’ll provide some depth in the organization, but is unlikely to have a major role with Chicago in 2022.

Dermody re-signed with the Cubs on a minor league deal last month, but Steve Adams of MLB Trade Rumors says the lefty is now headed to Japan to play for the Seibu Lions. The 30-year-old holds a 5.13 ERA over 29 appearances across parts of three major league seasons.

Dermody threw one scoreless inning of relief for the Cubs this past September before getting pushed off the 40-man roster. He’ll get a fresh chance in 2021 to stick in the bullpen mix on the North Side of Chicago.

Dermody was designated for assignment by Chicago on Monday and passed through waivers unclaimed.

The move clears a spot for the newly-claimed Billy Hamilton on the 40-man roster. Dermody was just called up on Sunday and tossed a scoreless inning against the Cardinals in his lone appearance.

Dermody will join the Cubs’ bullpen ahead of Sunday night’s game against the Cardinals. The 30-year-old left-hander last appeared in a major league game in 2017 with the Blue Jays.

Dermody is a left-handed reliever who made brief stints with the Blue Jays in 2016 and 2017. He’ll be nothing more than organizational depth over these last two months.

Dermondy earned the promotion by putting up a 1.82 ERA and 47/8 K/BB ratio over 54 1/3 innings across three levels this season in the minors. The 26-year-old will be making his major league debut when he gets into a game.

Dermody had a cup of coffee last season, yielding four runs over three frames with the big club. He’ll work in long relief.

Dermody was only up for a couple days in his most recent stint in the majors and didn’t make an appearance. He’ll rejoin Buffalo’s bullpen.
