Svanson

Svanson was optioned to Triple-A on May 24 after struggling to an 8.77 ERA and 1.95 WHIP across his first 25 2/3 innings. With Ryan Fernandez (back) hitting the injured list, he’ll get another opportunity to see if he can get his season back on track in a middle relief role.

The Cardinals needed to clear a spot on their active roster for the arrival of Brycen Mautz on Sunday and it looks like Svanson was the odd man out this time around. The 27-year-old right-hander has struggled to an 8.77 ERA, 1.95 WHIP and a 26/15 K/BB ratio over 25 2/3 innings with the Cardinals this season. He’ll see if he can reclaim his form at the Triple-A level.

Svanson returns to the big league prior to Monday’s series opener against the division-rival Cubs. The 26-year-old rookie reliever has compiled a solid 3.12 ERA and 24/8 K/BB ratio across 26 innings (17 appearances) this season in middle relief work.

Svanson heads back to the minors to allow St. Louis to re-stock their bullpen mix with a fresh arm in Gordon Graceffo. The 26-year-old righty threw 34 pitches over 2 2/3 scoreless frames on Friday against Atlanta. He’s posted a strong 3.12 ERA and 24/8 K/BB ratio across 26 innings (17 appearances) this season in low-leverage work. He’ll be back at some point in the early stages of the second half.

Svanson gets the nod to join St. Louis’ bullpen for Wednesday’s game against the Cubs. The 26-year-old righty has compiled a respectable 3.95 ERA across 13 2/3 innings (10 appearances) this season at the big-league level.

This is Svanson’s reward for throwing 52 pitches and saving the rest of the Cardinals pen on Sunday. The 26-year-old had a 3.95 ERA in 13 2/3 innings in the majors.
