The move was made in order to clear a spot on the 40-man roster for the activation of Kris Medlen. Young, who batted .208 (10-for-48) with one double and one RBI in two stints with the big club this season, will likely clear waivers and remain in the organization.

He’ll receive a spring training invite. Young batted just .208 (10-for-48) with one double and one RBI with the Braves this past season. He does offer some defensive versatility with the ability to play second base and all three outfield positions, but he’s a longshot to win a roster spot.

Young will presumably take the roster spot of Andy Dirks (Achilles) or the struggling Don Kelly. He’ll give the Tigers some defensive versatility in the short-term, but offers very little in the way of fantasy upside.

Young went 1-for-10 with the Tigers earlier this season and is hitting .250/.410/.342 in 67 games at the Triple-A level. He’ll represent minor league depth.

Young was released by the Tigers on Saturday. He went 1-for-10 with nine strikeouts in a brief call-up earlier in the season, and was hitting an abysmal .212/.363/.276 in96 games with Triple-A Toledo. He’ll merely serve as organizational depth for the Cardinals.

Avila is batting sixth and just like that Detroit’s bench isn’t quite so depleted. Matt Young, playing left field and batting second, will make his first start for the Tigers on Tuesday.

Young was sent outright to Triple-A Toledo last month, and may have requested his release. He’ll attempt to continue his career elsewhere as minor league depth.

The Tigers also sent Casey Crosby to the minors and will call up Thad Weber and activate Doug Fister from the disabled list on Saturday. Young went 1-for-10 with a double and an RBI during his brief stint with the big club.
