Giants acquired RHP Miguel Mendez and INF Joniel Hernandez from the Padres for LHP Robbie Ray and cash considerations.

The Padres’ cupboard is pretty bare, but Mendez projects as a quality reliever and Hernandez has been a big success as a 17-year-old in the Dominican Summer League. Mendez is still starting at the moment, having posted a 4.93 ERA and a 38/17 K/BB in 34 2/3 innings over 11 starts since moving up to Double-A. It’s possible he’ll emerge as a closer candidate someday.

The Padres are near a deal to acquire Robbie Ray from the Giants, sources told ESPN’s Jeff Passan.

RHP Miguel Mendez and shortstop Joniel Hernandez make up the return for the Giants. Ray will join a Padres rotation that’s pretty much just Michael King and some swingmen at the moment. He has a 3.08 ERA this season as he closes out a five-year, $115 million deal he originally signed with the Mariners.
