Left-hander Phil Coke, who signed a minor-league deal with the Blue Jays last week after being released by the Cubs, has been called up from Triple-A to join Toronto’s bullpen.

Coke tossed four shutout innings in three appearances at Triple-A to convince the Blue Jays to call him up, but he had a 6.30 ERA in 16 appearances for the Cubs before getting released and at age 32 has a lengthy history of struggling whenever he’s used as more than a situational left-hander.

For his career Coke has held left-handed hitters to a .245 batting average and .650 OPS, compared to a .305 batting average and .825 OPS versus righties.
