Edwin Jackson struggling since 149-pitch no-hitter

Yesterday afternoon Edwin Jackson turned in his third straight clunker of a start since no-hitting the Rays on June 25, taking a loss against the Padres by allowing four runs on nine hits and four walks in 6.1 innings. Jackson has allowed 13 runs in 16.1 innings since the no-hitter, walking 11 batters while opponents hit .328 against him. It’d be easy to point to throwing 149 pitches in the no-hitter as the reason for his struggles, but while that surely hasn’t helped matters Jackson was struggling long before the stress of that heavy workload. He was 4-6 with a 5.05 ERA before the no-hitter and if you remove that one game from his season totals Jackson has a 5.35 ERA and 88/50 K/BB ratio in 114.1 innings overall. And really, he didn’t even pitch all that well during the no-hitter, allowing nine baserunners and needing 149 pitches to record 27 outs. Of course, Dallas Braden is 0-5 since his no-hitter and is currently on the disabled list, and Armando Galarraga was demoted to Triple-A just six starts after his imperfect game.
