John Shea of the San Francisco Chronicle reports that the Giants have placed right-hander Brian Wilson on the 15-day disabled list, retroactive to August 16, with inflammation in his throwing elbow.

Wilson has been battling elbow soreness since early last week and did not make enough progress this weekend. He’s eligible to return at the end of August.

The bearded closer has posted a 3.19 ERA and 52/31 K/BB ratio through 53 2/3 innings this season, converting 35-of-40 save opportunities.

San Francisco promoted right-hander Steve Edlefsen from Triple-A Frenso to provide bullpen depth.
