Mets reliever Jeurys Familia undergoes hernia surgery

The Mets announced this afternoon that reliever Jeurys Familia underwent surgery yesterday in Philadelphia to repair bilateral sport hernias.

This is the second hernia surgery in the back-end of the Mets’ bullpen since the end of the season, as closer Jenrry Mejia had his earlier this month. Mejia revealed in August that he was pitching through a hernia, but Familia’s injury wasn’t known until now. Still, both pitchers should be ready for spring training.

Familia emerged as a trusted late-inning bridge for Terry Collins this season, posting a 2.21 ERA and 73/32 K/BB ratio over 77 1/3 innings to go along with a 57.4 percent ground ball rate. The 25-year-old right-hander made 76 appearances, tied for fourth-most in the majors.
