Yankees starter Chase Whitley exited Thursday’s start against the Rays with an elbow injury. The right-hander underwent an MRI, which showed a partial tear of the ulnar collateral ligament in his elbow, MLB.com’s Bryan Hoch reports. Surgery is an option, but he’ll be reevaluated in New York first.
Whitley had done a good job over his first two starts before being hit around by the Orioles and leaving Thursday’s start against the Rays in his most recent two starts. Overall, he has a 4.19 ERA with a 16/5 K/BB ratio in 19 1/3 innings.
Chris Capuano, who has been dealing with a quadriceps injury, is expected to come off of the disabled list to take Whitley’s place in the rotation.
