As expected, the Orioles hired former A’s, Mets, and Brewers pitching coach Rick Peterson, but he’ll fill the role of pitching development coordinator rather than pitching coach.

Brittany Ghiroli of MLB.com says that’s actually a new position created by the Orioles, who’ll keep Rick Adair as their pitching coach and have Peterson work primarily with minor leaguers.

Peterson’s imminent hiring was first reported several weeks ago, but according to Ghiroli there was “a lengthy negotiation process in which Peterson was interviewed several times over a month-and-a-half period.”

Peterson was fired by Milwaukee following the 2010 season after Brewers pitchers ranked dead last among NL teams in ERA, so his reputation has certainly taken some hits since his days in Oakland.
