Report: Padres will decide on interim manager within 24-48 hours

San Diego Padres Logo

The Padres fired manager Bud Black earlier today and have installed bench coach Dave Roberts as his temporary replacement. However, they are moving quickly to settle on an interim manager to lead the club for the remainder of the season:

According to Marty Caswell of 1090 Sports Radio, Padres general manager A.J. Preller said tonight that Roberts is among the internal candidates for the job. Pat Murphy, manager for the team’s Triple-A affiliate in El Paso, will also be interviewed. In fact, Peter Gammons reports that he’s on his way to San Diego tonight.

You might recall that Craig Counsell wanted to add Murphy to his coaching staff after replacing Ron Roenicke as Brewers’ manager last month. The Padres wouldn’t let him go, which led to some speculation that he was being eyed as a potential replacement for Black.

The Padres enter play tonight at 32-33 on the year, six games behind the Dodgers in the National League West.
