As expected no teams wanted anything to do with Vernon Wells’ contract after the Yankees designated him for assignment last week, so the 35-year-old outfielder passed through waivers unclaimed and has been released by New York.

Wells’ collapse was incredibly fast, as he went from hitting .273 with 31 homers and an .847 OPS for the Blue Jays in 2010 to failing to crack a .700 OPS in 2011, 2012, and 2013. And now he’s looking for work, most likely as a part-time platoon player or bench bat and most likely on a minor-league contract.
