According to Ben Badler of Baseball America, Yankees prospect right-hander Omar Luis will be eligible for December’s Rule 5 Draft.
It’s a bit of a surprise, but Luis is eligible due to a technicality because he has signed two contracts with the same team. The 21-year-old originally signed for a $4 million bonus in 2012, but ran into visa issues and then had his contract voided after an issue popped up in his physical. He then agreed to a reduced bonus of $2.5 million in April. Luis had some serious command issues during his first taste of pro ball this past season, so he would make for a risky pick in the Rule 5 Draft, but at the very least the Yankees might be forced to add him to the 40-man roster next fall if he takes a step forward.
