Mariners optioned LHP Robinson Ortiz to Triple-A Tacoma; reassigned LHP Kade Anderson, C Brian O’Keefe, SS Will Wilson, 1B Patrick Wisdom and RHPS Guillo Zuñiga and Randy Dobnak to minor league camp.
Anderson, the third-overall pick in the 2025 MLB Draft, looked extremely impressive in three Cactus League outings this spring and appears to be on the fast-track to the big leagues. The 21-year-old southpaw possesses enough strikeout upside to make an immediate fantasy impact once he reaches the majors. He’s one of the few pitching prospects worth stashing at the outset of the year, especially in deeper mixed leagues.
  • SEA 3rd Baseman #16
Mariners signed 1B/3B Patrick Wisdom to a minor league deal with an invitation to spring training.
Wisdom has slashed .209/.291/.459 in seven MLB seasons with 88 home runs in 455 games. He spent last year in Korea, hitting .236/.321/.535 with 35 home runs and 85 RBI in 119 games. His power is unquestioned, but his questionable contact makes it hard for him to stick on an MLB roster.
  • INT 3rd Baseman #16
Patrick Wisdom signed with the Kia Tigers of the Korea Baseball Organization.
On paper, this sure seems like a perfect fit. Wisdom was non-tendered by the Cubs near the end of November, but the 33-year-old has been a consistent source of power. He just hasn’t consistently helped anywhere else. A good showing in the KBO could see him return to the states.
  • FA Relief Pitcher #73
Cubs non-tendered RHP Adbert Alzolay, INF Patrick Wisdom, OF Brennen Davis and RHP Trey Wingenter.
This was a formality after all of these players were DFA’d to open up 40-man roster spots on Tuesday. They’re officially free agents now. It sounds like the Cubs are hoping Alzolay returns, but Wisdom is likely to head elsewhere.
  • CHC 3rd Baseman #16
Cubs designated INF Patrick Wisdom for assignment.
It clears room on the 40-man roster for Eli Morgan, who is reportedly being traded to Chicago from the Guardians. Wisdom still has impressive power, but his contact issues have kept him from contributing in any other category over his short career. Still, someone looking for pop off the bench will likely give Wisdom a look. We won’t make the easy pun.
  • CHC 3rd Baseman #16
Patrick Wisdom went 1-for-3 with a solo homer and a walk against the Nationals on Saturday.
Wisdom had one of Chicago’s only two hits of the game, breaking MacKenzie Gore’s no-hit bid in the seventh inning with a solo home run. He also drew a walk. The 33-year-old slugger has slashed .186/.256/.428 with eight homers and 23 RBI across 161 plate appearances.
  • CHC 3rd Baseman #17
Isaac Paredes was scratched from Sunday’s lineup against the Blue Jays with discomfort in his right shoulder.
Paredes will get at least Sunday off while dealing with the shoulder ailment. Patrick Wisdom is starting at third base and hitting eighth. Paredes may need to undergo testing, but for now the 25-year-old should be considered day-to-day.
  • CHC 3rd Baseman #16
Patrick Wisdom went 1-for-1 with a grand slam against the Royals on Saturday.
Wisdom’s home run was his fifth of the year. He hit a pinch-hit go-ahead grand slam in the seventh inning off Sam Long. Wisdom has started only two games in July, but the grand slam is at least a reminder of the prodigious power that he still possesses. He remains off the fantasy radar until or unless there’s either an injury or trade that increases his playing time significantly.
  • CHC Left Fielder #52
Pete Crow-Armstrong is in the Cubs lineup against a lefty Wednesday for just the second time as a major leaguer.
Seeing Crow-Armstring and Michael Busch in and Patrick Wisdom out of the lineup against a lefty is odd, but it’s because the Giants are likely to treat starter Erik Miller as a true opener and lift him before he faces Crow-Armstrong even once in the ninth spot. This will be Miller’s fifth start, but he’s yet to get more than five outs in any of them.
  • CHC 3rd Baseman #16
Patrick Wisdom went 0-for-4 with three strikeouts as the Cubs’ leadoff man Friday against the Reds.
Wisdom had never before led off a game until this season. The Cubs have tried it three times versus southpaws and watched him go 2-for-12 with seven strikeouts and no runs scored. He’s been rather productive the rest of the time, but he hasn’t been able to earn many starts against righties.
