Rockies returned Rule 5 pick RHP RJ Petit to the Tigers.

The 6-foot-8 Petit, who had a 2.44 ERA in 66 1/3 innings between Double- and Triple-A in 2025, was the first pick in last year’s Rule 5 draft, but he tore his UCL in March and required Tommy John surgery. The Rockies have decided against putting him back on their 40-man and he cleared waivers, so now he’s back with the Tigers. Assuming they decline to add him to their 40-man later this month, he’ll again be Rule 5 eligible.

Rockies transferred RHP RJ Petit to the 60-day injured list.

The Rule 5 pick is set to miss the entire 2026 season after undergoing Tommy John reconstructive elbow surgery, so this move was a mere formality. It cleared a spot on the Rockies’ 40-man roster to add Valente Bellozo on Thursday.

Rockies placed RHP RJ Petit on the 15-day injured list.

Petit will miss the entire season after undergoing Tommy John surgery earlier this month. The 26-year-old reliever was the first-overall selection in the Rule 5 Draft back in December.

RJ Petit underwent Tommy John reconstructive elbow surgery.

Petit was diagnosed with a UCL sprain in his right elbow, and he underwent the season-ending procedure a few weeks later. The 26-year-old was the first pick of the Rule 5 draft, but now he’ll head to the 60-day injured list with a chance to help the Colorado bullpen in 2027.

The Rockies announced Monday that right-hander RJ Petit has been diagnosed with a UCL sprain in his right elbow.

The Rockies plucked the hulking 26-year-old hurler from the Tigers with the first pick in December’s Rule 5 draft with the expectation that he’d land a spot in the team’s Opening Day bullpen. He’s heading for a second opinion, but it’s very possible that surgery is an option here. Look for the Rockies to provide an update on his status pending that second consultation.

Rockies selected RHP RJ Petit from the Detroit Tigers with the first pick of the 2025 Rule 5 Draft.

Petit is massive, a 6-foot-8 hurler that is listed at 300 pounds. He forged a 2.68 ERA while reaching Triple-A Toledo in 2025 with a K/BB ratio of 79/22 over 66 1/3 innings. He has a good chance of being a relatively-significant part of the Colorado bullpen in 2026.

The Tigers have moved reliever RJ Petit up to Triple-A Toledo.

One of the biggest pitchers in baseball, Petit, 25, is listed at 6-foot-8 and 300 pounds. He had a 2.28 ERA and a 46/12 K/BB in 43 1/3 innings for Double-A Erie, and if he keeps it up at the new level, he could be a candidate for the Tigers pen sometime soon.
