Brantly was designated for assignment by the Marlins back in July and opted for free agency rather than staying in their minor league system. He will now head to the Yankees, where he played back in 2021 and 2022.

Brantly will presumably stick around as emergency organizational catching depth after passing through waivers unclaimed. The 36-year-old veteran backstop appeared in three games earlier this season for the Marlins before suffering a lat strain in his right shoulder.

Brantly has been on the shelf since late April recovering from a lat strain in his right shoulder. The 36-year-old journeyman backstop figures to pass through waivers and elect free agency unless he decides to stick around as emergency organizational depth.

Brantly was injured Sunday in his third appearance since replacing an ailing Nick Fortes on the Marlins rotation. He’ll probably no longer have a spot once he’s ready to return.

Brantly was 0-for-2 before leaving the game after an awkward swing. There’s a chance top prospect Agustín Ramírez, who is hitting .258 with three homers and five steals in 18 games at Triple-A Jacksonville, gets the call to the majors if Brantly winds up requiring a trip to the injured list.

There’s zero fantasy-adjacent impact here, but it’s a fascinating footnote that Brantly is putting on a Marlins uniform for the first time since 2013. The 35-year-old journeyman backstop is back with the club that originally drafted him and will spend a couple weeks in a reserve role with Nick Fortes (oblique) on the shelf.

Brantly, 35, will head up to Miami with Nick Fortes out with an oblique strain. The veteran backstop will likely split time behind the plate with Liam Hicks, but neither he nor Hicks makes for an adequate fantasy backstop. Neither does Fortes, to be fair.

Brantly broke into the majors with the Marlins back in 2012 and got into 98 contests over a two-year span. The 35-year-old journeyman got into three games last year with the Rays. He’s merely emergency organizational depth for Miami at this stage of his career.

Brantly was designated for assignment Saturday, and was not claimed on waivers. The catcher could elect waivers, but also is just as likely — if not more so — to stay in Triple-A to provide organizational depth.

Brantly went 1-for-9 in a three-game stint with the Rays while Ben Rortvedt was away from the club on paternity leave.
