The Cincinnati outfield is somewhat depleted at the moment, so there’s no harm in taking a shot on Balentien despite some very evident flaws in his approach at the plate. The 26-year-old Manuel had a 2.70 ERA in 46 2/3 innings at Triple-A this season and has pitched 4 1/3 scoreless innings for the Reds this month. He could be a useful asset in the Seattle bullpen.

Not a bad return for the Mariners considering that they clearly had no use for Balentien in their future plans. He has been assigned to Triple-A Tacoma initially, but could help the Seattle bullpen before the season is over.

The Reds seemed quite a bit higher on Maloney a year ago. He wasn’t considered for the fifth spot in the team’s rotation, and he gets sent out after making just two appearances. Manuel, one of the club’s top relief prospects, was a disappointment this spring, giving up eight earned runs in two innings.

Manuel, who was just brought up from the minors on Saturday, failed to make an appearance with the big club over the weekend. The 26-year-old right-hander returns to a sterling 0.98 ERA with the PawSox.
