Pirates re-signed INF/OF Ronny Simon to a minor league contract with an invitation to spring training.
Simon fortifies Pittsburgh’s bench depth heading into next season after being non-tendered last month. The 25-year-old former prospect hit .234/.299/.273 with seven RBI and one steal in 27 games this past season between the Pirates and Marlins. He figures to have a decent shot at making the club’s season-opening roster in a versatile utility role.

Pirates non-tendered RHP Dauri Moreta, RHP Colin Holderman, OF Alexander Canario and OF Ronny Simon.
The Pirates’ only non-tenders were the four players they designated for assignment on Tuesday. Moreta spent considerable time in the minors after returning from Tommy John surgery last season, but he had a 3.24 ERA in 16 2/3 innings while in the majors. With his career 29% strikeout rate, there will be a lot of teams interested in him on a minor league deal.
  • PIT Relief Pitcher #35
Pirates designated RHP Colin Holderman, OF Alexander Canario, RHP Dauri Moreta and OF Ronny Simon for assignment.
Holderman, Canario, Moreta and Simon have been jettisoned from Pittsburgh’s 40-man roster to make room for an influx of prospects that the organization needed to shield from next month’s Rule 5 Draft. No real surprises here.
  • PIT 2nd Baseman #63
Pirates transferred INF/OF Ronny Simon from the 10-day to the 60-day injured list.
Simon is out for the season because of a shoulder dislocation suffered last month. He’ll probably be dropped from the Pirates roster next month.
  • PIT 2nd Baseman #63
Pirates placed 2B Ronny Simon on the 10-day injured list with a left shoulder dislocation.
Simon hits the shelf after suffering a significant shoulder injury during Friday’s series opener against the Red Sox. The 25-year-old infielder is a virtual lock to miss the final month of the season. It’ll be intriguing prospect Cam Devanney coming up from Triple-A Indianapolis to take his roster spot.

Ronny Simon was pulled from Friday night’s contest against the Red Sox due to a left shoulder injury.
The 25-year-old appeared to dislocate his shoulder while diving headfirst into home plate to score a run in the eighth inning. He’s undergoing additional evaluation and the Pirates will provide an update on his status as soon as more information becomes available.
  • PIT 2nd Baseman #63
Pirates recalled INF/OF Ronny Simon from Triple-A Indianapolis.
The versatile 25-year-old was just optioned back to Triple-A on Tuesday, but he’ll return with Jack Suwinski (groin) landing on the injured list on Friday. Simon has hit .233/.250/.267 with zero homers, seven RBI and one stolen base in 88 plate appearances between the Marlins and Pirates this season.

Pirates optioned INF/OF Ronny Simon to Triple-A Indianapolis.
Simon was apparently good enough to start in an outfield corner and bat leadoff in seven of his 11 games on the Pirates’ roster, but now he’s right back where he was before Oneil Cruz got hurt. He hit .233/.250/.267 in 32 plate appearances.

Pirates recalled INF/OF Ronny Simon from Triple-A Indianapolis.
Simon is up with Oneil Cruz on the concussion injured list. The 25-year-old was claimed off waivers from the Marlins in August, and will likely work in a reserve role while with Pittsburgh.

Ronny Simon went 3-for-5 with a run, an RBI, and a stolen base for Triple-A Indianapolis on Wednesday.
Simon gained recognition earlier this year for his visible showing of emotions during a three-error inning for the Marlins. He was unfortunately designated for assignment shortly after; however, the Pirates claimed him off waivers and moved him to the outfield, where he has taken off. In 47 games at Triple-A for the Pirates, Simon is hitting .299/.390/.460 with seven home runs, 30 RBI, 31 runs, and 23 steals. Yes, 23 steals in 47 games. The Pirates don’t really have room since they shockingly didn’t trade Tommy Pham at the deadline, but Simon is only 25 years old, so maybe he gets a look next season.
