McGough

McGough returns to the Athletics’ middle relief mix with lefty Sean Newcomb hitting the injured list prior to Saturday’s game against the Pirates. The 35-year-old journeyman has made 10 appearances in the majors this season between the Athletics and Diamondbacks.

McGough will be replaced on the active roster by Mitch Spence. The 35-year-old struggled in his brief time in the majors with the A’s; allowing five runs in five innings across three relief appearances.

McGough, 35, was signed to a minor league contract back in June after he elected free agency from the Diamondbacks. He has posted a 3.95 ERA, 1.54 WHIP and an 18/4 K/BB ratio over 13 2/3 innings at Triple-A Las Vegas since joining the A’s organization. He’ll give manager Mark Kotsay another option to deploy in the middle innings.

McGough fortifies the Athletics’ organizational relief depth after registering a pedestrian 6.43 ERA across seven innings (seven appearances) this season for the Diamondbacks. The 35-year-old righty made a career-high 63 appearances for Arizona back in 2023 and has logged just 33 combined over the last two seasons.

McGough will test the free agent waters after going unclaimed on waivers following his removal from Arizona’s 40-man roster last week. The 35-year-old righty has posted an inflated 6.43 ERA across seven innings (seven appearances) this season in the big leagues.

McGough was removed from Arizona’s 40-man roster earlier this week after Andrew Saalfrank’s one-year suspension for violating the league’s gambling policy concluded. The 35-year-old righty figures to pass through waivers unclaimed and remain with the club as extra relief depth.

McGough has ping-ponged several times already between Arizona’s bullpen and Triple-A Reno over the last month. He’ll likely continue doing so for the remainder of the year.

The 35-year-old right-hander has made just one appearance with the Diamondbacks this season, working two scoreless frames. He’ll give manager Torey Lovullo another potential weapon to deploy in the middle innings.

McGough mopped up a game the Diamondbacks were losing 7-2 with two scoreless innings on Friday. He’ll remain a depth piece in the Arizona/Reno shuffle.

McGough made 89 appearances for the Diamondbacks from 2023-2024, finishing with an underwhelming 5.59 ERA, 1.41 WHIP and 111/51 K/BB ratio across 103 innings of work. The 35-year-old journeyman provides Arizona with some additional bullpen depth heading into Sunday’s series finale against the Braves.
