Tigers optioned LHP Sean Guenther to Triple-A Toledo.
The Tigers needed to free up a spot on their active roster for the return of Matt Vierling on Friday night and unfortunately Guenther was the odd man out this time around. The 29-year-old southpaw has registered a 5.23 ERA, 1.45 WHIP and an 8/5 K/BB ratio over 10 1/3 innings at the big league level this season. He’ll almost assuredly get another opportunity with the Tigers before the summer is through.
  • DET Starting Pitcher #54
The Tigers will have Sean Guenther open ahead of Keider Montero in Monday’s game against the Cardinals.
Montero also pitched behind an opener last time through when he gave up three runs in 3 1/3 innings against the Red Sox. He has a 4.68 ERA in 25 innings over five appearances his season.

Tigers recalled LHP Sean Guenther from Triple-A Toledo.
Guenther is up to replace Bailey Horn, with Horn optioned to Toledo after Wednesday’s game. Guenther will be a middle-inning option in this stint with the Tigers.
  • DET 3rd Baseman #17
Tigers optioned INF Jace Jung and RHP Sean Guenther to Triple-A Toledo.
Jung will begin the 2025 season in Toledo, but he’s one of the top hitting prospects in the Detroit system, so there’s a great chance he finishes the campaign in the majors. That being said, fantasy managers can wait for Jung to get that promotion rather than stashing him on the bench to begin the year.

Tigers recalled LHP Sean Guenther from Triple-A Toledo.
With Alex Faedo on the Paternity List, Guenther will be called up to give the Tigers a fresh arm in the bullpen. The 28-year-old has allowed one run in 1/13 innings with the Tigers this season and has a 3.31 ERA in 51 2/3 innings at Triple-A.
  • DET Relief Pitcher #49
Tigers placed RHP Alex Faedo on the Paternity List.
Congrats to Faedo and his growing family. The right-hander will miss the next three games, but he also threw 35 pitches out of the bullpen on Tuesday and may not have pitched during those games regardless. Sean Guenther was called up from Triple-A Toledo in a corresponding move.
  • DET Relief Pitcher #73
Tigers optioned LHP Sean Guenther to Triple-A Toledo.
It’s the corresponding move to the Tigers selecting the contract of Brant Hurter. Guenther was just called up Thursday, and there’s a decent chance he could be back up before the season comes to an end; albeit in a role that doesn’t deserve fantasy consideration.
  • DET Relief Pitcher #37
Tigers selected the contract of LHP Sean Guenther from Triple-A Toledo.
Guenther last appeared in the majors during the 2021 season when he made 14 relief appearances for the Marlins before undergoing Tommy John surgery just prior to the 2022 campaign. The 28-year-old left-hander has recorded a strong 3.86 ERA, 1.33 WHIP and 46/14 K/BB ratio across 44 1/3 innings (34 appearances, two starts) this season at the Triple-A level. He’ll pitch in long relief situations for Detroit moving forward.
  • DET Shortstop #80
Tigers optioned INF Eddys Leonard, INF/OF Wenceel Pérez, RHPs Mason Englert, Wilmer Flores and Keider Montero and C Dillon Dingler, to Triple A Toledo; Reassigned RHP Devin Sweet, LHP Sean Guenther, C Donny Sands and OF TJ Hopkins to minor league camp.
Leonard was reportedly in the running for a bench spot with Detroit, but the club ultimately will send him down to Triple-A to start the season. The 23-year-old posted a .904 OPS in 40 games with Triple-A Toledo in 2023, so there’s likely a chance he gets an opportunity down the road barring an injury.
  • DET Relief Pitcher #73
Tigers sent LHP Sean Guenther outright to Triple-A Toledo.
The Tigers just claimed Guenther off of waivers from the Marlins in early November, but he got the boot off of the 40-man roster as the Tigers had players to protect for the Rule 5 draft. He has accepted his outright assignment and will continue his rehab there as he looks to return after Tommy John surgery caused him to miss the entire 2022 season.
