Cardinals recalled INF/OF Thomas Saggese from Triple-A Memphis.
Saggese returns to St. Louis, just a couple days after being sent down to play everyday at the Triple-A level, with veteran Ramón Urías hitting the injured list with an elbow issue. The 24-year-old has struggled at the dish and is unlikely to play enough to make any sort of fantasy impact.

Cardinals optioned INF/OF Thomas Saggese to Triple-A Memphis
It’s been a rough start to the season for Saggese, who is slashing .170/.228/.208 with a 33 percent strikeout rate in 57 plate appearances. He has solid minor league numbers, but he now owns a .239/.283/.318 slash line in 404 MLB plate appearances, which is not promising.

José Fermín was scratched from Tuesday’s lineup against the Guardians.
No word on the reason for the move. Thomas Saggese takes over in left field to face Guardians starter Joey Cantillo.

Masyn Winn (leg) remains out of the Cardinals’ starting lineup for Sunday’s series finale against the Red Sox.
Winn was removed from Friday’s game after being hit by a pitch just below his right knee. He sat out Saturday’s game as a precautionary measure and it sounds like he needs at least another day before he’ll be ready to return to action. The encouraging news for fantasy managers is that it doesn’t sound like he’ll require a trip to the injured list. Thomas Saggese will take his place at shortstop once again on Sunday and will bat eighth against Brayan Bello and the Red Sox.

Masyn Winn (leg) is out of the lineup for Saturday’s game against the Red Sox.
Winn is getting some extra time off to rest and recover following an early exit from Friday’s game after being hit by a pitch just below his right knee. The 24-year-old shortstop has been diagnosed with a lower leg contusion and isn’t expected to require a lengthy absence. Thomas Saggese takes over at shortstop in his absence.

Masyn Winn (hip) is not in the lineup for Sunday’s bout against the Tigers.
Winn will miss another game after exiting Friday’s matchup versus Detroit with tightness in his hip. He’s still considered day-to-day, but he’ll at least begin Sunday’s contest on the bench with Thomas Saggese getting the start at short and hitting sixth.

Masyn Winn (hip) is out of the lineup for Saturday’s showdown against the Tigers.
No surprise here after Winn left Friday’s series opener in Detroit with hip tightness. The 24-year-old shortstop attributed the issue to overdoing it with his swing in an effort to break out of season-opening slump earlier this week prior to Wednesday evening’s car accident. It doesn’t sound like a serious concern but fantasy managers should keep a close eye on the situation this weekend. It’ll be rookie sensation JJ Wetherholt leading off with Thomas Saggese taking over at shortstop in his absence.

Jordan Walker is not in the starting lineup on Wednesday against the Mets.
Walker is off to a solid start, going 5-for-17 with one home run, six runs scored, and three RBI. This is just a routine day off with Thomas Saggese entering the lineup in left field and Nathan Church switching over to right field.

Cardinals placed OF Lars Nootbaar on the 60-day IL with bilateral Haglund’s Deformity excision.
That’s unexpected. It’d been clear for a couple of weeks that Nootbaar would open up on the IL following his heel surgeries, but it was supposed to be the 10-day. Nootbaar has been hitting and throwing since the beginning of the spring and recently resumed running, but we take it that didn’t go as well as hoped. Nathan Church, Thomas Saggese and José Fermín will divvy up his at-bats for at least the first two months.

Thomas Saggese went 2-for-3 with a homer and two RBI in the Cardinals’ 7-4 win over the Marlins on Saturday.
Saggese, who missed time playing for Team Italy in the WBC, made his fifth outfield start today. With JJ Wetherholt overtaking him and Ramón Urías getting brought in as a utilityman, Saggese has played the infield just twice (both times at shortstop) this spring. He’s now played left field three times and center twice. Given that, it seems like he’s batting Nathan Church for the last spot on the Cardinals bench, which is a spot that figures to go away if Lars Nootbaar can return in mid-April. He’s batting .316/.381/.526 in 21 plate appearances.
