Rays optioned RHP Ty Johnson to Triple-A Durham.

The rookie right-hander threw 38 pitches against the Phillies on Saturday and wasn’t going to be available for Sunday’s regular season finale, so the Rays opted to swap him out for a fresh arm in Jesse Scholtens. Johnson has posted a 3.52 ERA, 1.44 WHIP and an 11/4 K/BB ratio across 7 2/3 innings in eight appearances with the Rays on the season.

Rays selected the contract of RHP Ty Johnson from Triple-A Durham.

It’s the first trip to the big leagues for the 24-year-old hurler. Johnson was having a very strong season at Triple-A Durham, registering a 3.03 ERA, 0.96 WHIP and an 84/25 K/BB ratio across 62 1/3 innings in his 21 appearances (10 starts). He’ll give Kevin Cash another weapon to deploy in the middle innings.

Ty Johnson yielded one run in 2 1/3 innings Saturday in his start against the Red Sox.

Johnson has allowed just one hit and the one run in 5 1/3 innings this spring. The 24-year-old, who was picked up from the Cubs in the Isaac Paredes trade in 2024, finished up last year 7-6 with a 2.61 ERA and a 149/38 K/BB in 110 1/3 innings for Double-A Montgomery. He’s going to need to come up with a better third pitch to make it as a starter, but he could surface as a middle reliever at some point in 2026.

Rays acquired RHP Ty Johnson, INF/OF Christopher Morel and RHP Hunter Bigge from the Cubs for INF Isaac Paredes.

Johnson, 22, was a 15th-round selection by the Cubs from the 2023 draft class. He has functioned primarily as a starter in his minor league career, but ultimately his path to the big leagues may be out of the bullpen. In 18 appearances (10 starts) between Single-A Myrtle Beach and High-A South Bend this season, Johnson has posted a 3.54 ERA, 1.15 WHIP and an 81/22 K/BB ratio across 61 innings of work.
