Technically, Owens couldn’t be sent outright to Triple-A Toledo after clearing waivers because he was on the minor league injured list with a hip issue. The 24-year-old rookie has the option to explore opportunities elsewhere or return to Detroit on a minor league pact.

Owens, who is sidelined with a right hip injury at Triple-A Toledo, has been removed from Detroit’s 40-man roster to make room for newly acquired veteran reliever Rafael Montero. The 24-year-old rookie made three appearances earlier this season in the big leagues.

The 24-year-old hurler was with the big league club for Wednesday’s doubleheader against the Nationals and will head back top Triple-A after giving up one run on three walks and a pair of hits in his lone inning of work. He should get another shot to work out of the Tigers’ bullpen before the summer is through.

Owens, 24, is up to take the roster spot of Sawyer Gipson-Long with Long on the 15-day injured list due to neck stiffness. He’ll likely be a low-leverage option while he’s with Detroit.

Owens was shipped back to the minors ahead of Tuesday’s game against the Pirates to make room for veteran reliever Carlos Hernández on the club’s active roster.

Owens gets the nod to replace struggling veteran John Brebbia in Detroit’s relief stable after making a pair of scoreless appearances earlier this year. The 24-year-old rookie right-hander has compiled a pedestrian 5.74 ERA across 26 2/3 innings (24 appearances) this season at the Triple-A level.

Owens, 24, was only with the Tigers for a couple of days, but didn’t allow a run in his two innings of work. He heads back to Toledo with Beau Brieske (ankle) ready to come off the injured list.

It’s the first trip to the big leagues for the 24-year-old right-hander. Owens made 12 appearances out of the bullpen at Triple-A Toledo, registering a 4.50 ERA, 1.79 WHIP and an 11/9 K/BB ratio over 14 innings. He’ll add an extra arm to the bullpen for at least a couple of days.
