Padres declined club options on LHP Kyle Hart, INF/OF Tyler Wade and C Elias Díaz.
No real surprises here for the Padres as all three will head to free agency. Hart compiled a lackluster 5.86 ERA across 43 innings in his San Diego debut. Wade and Díaz are merely bench players at this stage of their respective careers.
  • SD 2nd Baseman #14
Padres sent INF/OF Tyler Wade outright to Triple-A El Paso.
Wade is apparently going to stick around as emergency depth for the Padres for the remainder of the season. The 30-year-old got into 59 games this year for San Diego before being designated for assignment last Friday.
  • SD 2nd Baseman #14
Padres designated INF Tyler Wade for assignment.
The Padres had to clear some room on their roster for all of their trade deadline acquisitions and that unfortunately left Wade on the outside looking in. The 30-year-old had hit is hitting just .206/.309/.252 with zero homers, nine RBI and one stolen base in 127 plate appearances for the Padres this season. It seems likely that he’ll pass through waivers unclaimed.
  • SD Shortstop #2
Xander Bogaerts was a late scratch from Wednesday’s lineup against the Nationals due to left shoulder soreness.
Bogaerts was slated to play shortstop for the finale against the Nationals, but the soreness will force him to take a break. Jose Iglesias moves over to shortstop from second base, and Tyler Wade will get the start at second base. For now, consider Bogaerts day-to-day.
  • SD Center Fielder #3
Jackson Merrill was scratched from Sunday’s lineup with an illness.
Merrill served as one of San Diego’s primary catalysts during Saturday’s impressive 21-run explosion at Coors Field. The 22-year-old emerging franchise cornerstone will sit out Sunday’s series finale due to illness. It’ll be Tyler Wade taking over in center field with Gavin Sheets moving to the cleanup spot.
  • SD 2nd Baseman #9
Jake Cronenworth (ribs) could join the Padres in Colorado to take on the Rockies on Friday.
Cronenworth hit the ground running in his first rehab game on Tuesday, blasting a home run and walking three times. He’ll play another rehab game on Wednesday and could rejoin the Padres in Colorado on Friday. If he does return this weekend, that could mean that Tyler Wade moves back to his role as a utility player off the bench.
  • SD Shortstop #2
Xander Bogaerts is not in the starting lineup for Saturday’s contest against the Astros.
Bogaerts will get a break after picking up just three hits in his last six games. He’ll take a seat with Jose Iglesias moving over to shortstop and Tyler Wade starting at second base.
  • SD 2nd Baseman #14
Tyler Wade went 2-for-2 with two walks and two runs scored Wednesday against the Cubs.
It’s not often that we blurb about Wade based on in-game performance, but we couldn’t let this one pass by; Wade reached base safely four times for the first in 451 games since making his major league debut in 2017. With both Jackson Merrill and Brandon Lockridge on the IL, Wade was making his second start in center field today. He’ll continue to see time there against righties until Merrill returns.
  • SD Center Fielder #28
Padres placed OF Brandon Lockridge on the 10-day injured list with a left hamstring strain.
Lockridge hits the shelf after being removed from Sunday’s game against the Rockies with a low-grade hamstring strain. It’ll be at least a couple weeks before he’s ready to return. There isn’t a great in-house option for San Diego to fill center field with franchise cornerstone Jackson Merrill (hamstring) also on the injured list, but it’ll likely be veteran Tyler Wade handling it on an emergency basis for now.
  • SD Center Fielder #28
Brandon Lockridge was removed from Sunday’s battle against the Rockies due to a low-grade hamstring strain.
Lockridge told reporters after the game that the strain wasn’t too severe and that he could have played through it if he needed to. He underwent an ultrasound after the game that revealed merely inflammation and no muscle damage. Still, it’s possible that it could cause Lockridge to miss at least a few games and a trip to the injured list isn’t entirely out the question. Tyler Wade replaced him in center on Sunday and could see extra action out there if Lockridge is forced to miss any time.
