Mills missed the previous two seasons recovering from Tommy John surgery after being shipped over from Kansas City. The 30-year-old battled control issues this season at the Triple-A level, finishing with a pedestrian 3.12 ERA and 49/30 K/BB ratio across 52 innings (32 appearances, seven starts).

Mills hasn’t pitched in the big leagues since the 2022 season and is still working his way back after undergoing Tommy John surgery in July, 2023. The 30-year-old righty will open the regular season back at Triple-A Worcester as extra organizational relief depth.

Mills is back with the Red Sox after he was cut from the team’s 40-man roster earlier this month. The 28-year-old was acquired last offseason from the Royals in exchange for reliever Jacob Wallace. As long as he’s healthy, he should open the 2024 season as the team’s starting center fielder where he’ll once again represent a solid all-around option from a fantasy perspective.
