Phillies optioned RHPs Yoniel Curet and Moisés Chace to Double-A Reading; optioned RHP Jean Cabrera and OF Gabriel Rincones Jr. to Triple-A Lehigh Valley.
Curet came over in an offseason trade with the Rays and offers enough strikeout upside to envision a back-end rotation or multi-inning relief role down the road. He’ll need to iron out some control issues to reach that potential. Chace and Cabrera are among the better pitching prospects in Philadelphia’s system and should ascend to the majors later this year.

Yoniel Curet gave up five runs without getting an out in relief Friday against the Phillies.
Curet allowed two hits, walked two and hit a batter, also mixing in a wild pitch. We were surprised when the Rays DFA’d the 23-year-old Curet to open up a spot on the 40-man in December, but they usually know what they’re doing. Picking him up may eventually pay off for the Phillies, but he’s not a candidate to contribute right now.

Phillies acquired RHP Yoniel Curet from the Rays for RHP Tommy McCollum.
Curet, who just turned 23 in November, was a rather surprising choice to get DFA’d when the Rays needed to open up a spot on the 40-man last week. He missed time in 2025 and finished with a 3.90 ERA and a 62/31 K/BB over 55 1/3 innings in his 14 starts and two relief appearances between Double- and Triple-A. He doesn’t have a truly plus second pitch yet, but his sinker averages 96 mph and there’s some potential with both his slider and changeup. He’ll likely open up next season in the Phillies’ Triple-A rotation.

Rays designated RHP Yoniel Curet for assignment.
The Rays needed to clear a spot on their roster to make room for the addition of Cedric Mullins and unfortunately it looks like Curet drew the short straw this time around. The 23-year-old hurler posted a 3.90 ERA, 1.43 WHIP and a 62/31 K/BB ratio over 55 1/3 innings across three minor league levels in 2025.
