Panthers signed WR Ainias Smith, G Ja’Tyre Carter, G Saahdiq Charles, WR Dan Chisena, RB Montrell Johnson, OLB Jamil Muhammad, LB Maz Mwansa, TE Bryce Pierre, WR Ja’seem Reed, S Demani Richardson, RB Anthony Tyus, LB Jacoby Windmon, LB Jared Bartlett, CB Tyrek Funderburk and G Joshua Gray to reserve/futures deals.
The former fifth-round Eagles wideout did not have any NFL playing time in 2024 after a 7/41/1 debut for the Eagles in 2024. He spent the whole year with the Panthers practice squad and could have a chance to battle with lower-rung receivers like Brycen Tremayne for a roster spot in 2026.
  • FA Running Back #34
Eagles have waived RB Montrell Johnson Jr.
Johnson was signed by the Eagles as an undrafted free agent this offseason. The 22-year-old running back was impressive in training camp, but also missed time with injury. He could return to the Eagles on the practice squad soon.
  • PHI Running Back #25
Eagles signed Florida RB Montrell Johnson.
Johnson (5’11/212) was Florida’s leading rusher from 2022-2023, missing three games to a knee injury in 2024. He saw college career-highs in carries (162) and rushing touchdowns (12) as a freshman at Louisiana, entering a committee after transferring to Florida. Johnson tested in the top five among running backs at the NFL Combine for the 40-yard dash and 20-yard shuttle, showing quick speed that made him a hard runner with the Gators. He was seldom used as a receiver outside of a 30-reception 2023 and was not asked to pass-block much. Knee injuries hampered his 2024, but Johnson showed enough to be a contributor at the end of a running back rotation at the next level. He could crack a shallow Philly depth chart beyond Saquon Barkley with a strong showing in training camp, but a season on the practice squad is the most likely outcome for Johnson.
  • CAR Running Back #37
Former Louisiana freshman RB Montrell Johnson has committed to Florida.
Johnson (5'11/200) turned in a solid season at Louisiana in 2021, rush for 841 yards and 12 touchdowns on 163 carries, but never saw the lion’s share of the touches. Now, as he departs Louisiana to rejoin head coach Billy Napier at Florida, Johnson could be in line for a much bigger workload after running backs Dameon Pierce and Malik Davis both declared for the NFL Draft. Johnson could compete for time with incoming freshman running back Trevor Etienne, but he should find a way to see the field one way or another.

  • CAR Running Back #37
Louisiana freshman RB Montrell Johnson has entered the transfer portal.
Johnson (5'11/200) hitting the portal marks yet another top-flight player on Louisiana’s roster to hit the transfer portal in recent days, as starting right guard O’Cyrus Torrence and starting cornerback Mekhi Garner have also entered the portal, putting new head coach Michael Desormeaux in somewhat of a difficult position heading into 2022. Last season for the Ragin’ Cajuns, Johnson was one of two top rushers for Louisiana, totaling 841 yards and a team-high 12 rushing touchdowns on 163 carries, and had two games in which he rushed for over 100 yards. Johnson’s usage was sporadic over the season, as the explosive back never saw more than 20 carries in any game, and had four games in which he saw eight or fewer carries. Likely in search of a starting role heading into 2022, Johnson could have solid market for teams in search of a young back with a few years of eligibility still remaining.

  • CAR Running Back #37
Louisiana freshman RB Montrell Johnson carried the ball five times for 62 yards in a 21-16 win over Louisiana-Monroe on Saturday afternoon.
Johnson (5'11/200) was not featured in this game as he has been in the past. The majority of the carries went to Emani Bailey and Chris Smith, but he made his touches count. On what ended up being the game-winning touchdown drive, Johnson started the four play drive with a 42-yard burst that flipped the field for the Ragin’ Cajuns. On the season, Johnson accumulated 776 yards rushing and 11 touchdowns that he will look to build on next Saturday against Appalachian State in the Sun Belt Title Game.

  • CAR Running Back #37
Louisiana freshman RB Montrell Johnson carried the ball 17 times for 98 yards and two touchdowns in a 21-17 victory over Louisiana over Georgia State on Thursday night.
Johnson (5'11/200) was the man once again for the Ragin’ Cajuns’. Going into the fourth quarter down 10-7, Johnson scored the last 14 points for his team, including the game-winner. He took a power run just inside the left tackle, put his foot into the ground, and exploded through the second level to score from 13 yards out. Riding an eight-game winning streak, the Ragin’ Cajuns’ look to get win number nine on the season against Troy next Saturday.

  • CAR Running Back #37
Louisiana freshman RB Montrell Johnson rushed for 150 yards and two touchdowns on 17 carries in a 28-27 victory over Arkansas State on Thursday night.
Johnson (5'11"/200) is having himself quite the freshman season for the Ragin’ Cajuns. Entering Thursday night’s game in Jonesboro, Johnson had rushed for 355 yards and five touchdowns. He broke the 500-yard milestone on the season Thursday night in most part to a 99-yard touchdown run. After getting pinned at the one-yard line, Johnson took a dive play, broke it outside, and went untouched for the score to respond to the Red Wolves touchdown in the first quarter. This spearheaded Louisiana’s 424 rushing yard performance. They look to continue that momentum next Saturday against Texas State.

  • CAR Running Back #37
Louisiana freshman RB Montrell Johnson rushed for 103 yards and a touchdown on 14 carries in a 41-13 victory over Appalachian State on Tuesday night.
Johnson (5'11"/200) spearheaded a Ragin’ Cajuns’ rushing attack that amassed 246 yards on the day. Johnson’s 36 yard run on the second drive helped set up the game-winning touchdown in the first quarter. He also set career highs in both carries and yards. The Ragin’ Cajuns’ take on Arkansas State next Thursday night.

  • CAR Running Back #37
Louisiana-Lafayette freshman Montrell Johnson rushed for 84 yards on 13 carries and four touchdowns in 49-14 win over Ohio.
Ohio kept this game within reach going into halftime, but Louisiana-Lafayette took over in the second half and broke this game off. Johnson (5'11"/200) was the leading force in this Ragin’ Cajuns offense when they looked to move the chains and score in the red zone. Three of his touchdowns came from the one-yard line; his most impressive was a toss six yards out, a wall of Ohio defenders met him at the goal line, and he reached out just enough to get the ball over the line, it even had the commentators fooled. Louisiana-Lafayette will travel to play Georgia Southern next Saturday 9/25.
