The IMSA WeatherTech SportsCar will return to endurance racing Sunday with the Sahlen’s Six Hours of The Glen at Watkins Glen International on Peacock. and NBCSN (on YouTubeTV).
With its first race over three hours since the Twelve Hours of Sebring in March, IMSA will reach the halfway mark of the 2026 season (the sixth of 11 race weekends) with a physical test on an 11-turn, 3.4-mile road course that has produced several close finishes.
In 11 of the past 13 races at Watkins Glen, the margin of victory was less than 2 seconds. Last year, Tom Blomqvist took the No. 60 Acura ARX-06 from an 11-second deficit in third place with 10 minutes remaining to a 1.88-second victory at the checkered flag when two Grand Touring Prototype cars ahead pitted.
“The guys gave me a target, and we were able to execute,” Blomqvist said of saving enough in his hybrid prototype to reach the end. “The guys did a great strategy, and the pace was set to be able to hit those really big fuel targets, and that’s what enabled me to go to the end and the others not.”
Just as difficult as managing the energy and fuel consumption is weathering the G forces on a layout with high-speed corners that allow for few breaks. The pole speed (133.685 mph) is the second highest on the circuit behind Daytona International Speedway (136.281).
“It’s the most physical track of the year,” No. 25 BMW M Hybrid V8 driver Philipp Eng said. “It’s very high G force overall, in the first chicane, in the corner after, and it’s just high speed and full commitment. So, it’s not only physically challenging, but also mentally, because you’re always traveling at very high speeds. You know that you’re only spending time in high-speed corners. So, I like the challenge.”
BMW will be seeking its first GTP win this season at Watkins Glen after three rival automakers (Porsche, Acura, Cadillac) have already reached victory lane in 2026. The past three years at the Glen have featured victories by Acura, Porsche and BMW.
In the championship standings, No. 31 Cadillac driver Jack Aitken has a 154-point lead in GTP. There are only 18 points separating the top two teams in the LMP2 category, which is racing for the third time this year and the first since Sebring.
In GTD Pro, there are 31 points separating the top four of the No. 4 Corvette, No. 1 Paul Miller BMW, No. 65 Ford and No. 3 Corvette.
