Jett Lawrence and Hunter Lawrence were in a class of their own in Moto 1 of the Washougal (Wash.) National, leading the remainder of the field by more than 43 seconds when the checkered flag waved.
Hunter kept Jett in sight with a two-second gap for the first half of the race, but Jett hit the afterburner and stretch his advantage to seven seconds by the time the checkers waved.
This is the eighth time in 15 motos that the Lawrence brothers finished first and second.
Jorge Prado and Haiden Deegan have battled for most of the season to determine who would be the best of class. In Moto 1 this week, Prado gained the advantage after surviving chaos in the second turn of the race.
Haiden Deegan was not as fortunate on the opening lap. He paced qualification and used the best gate pick to his advantage and earned the holeshot. His time in the lead did not last long. Deegan tucked his wheel in Turn 2 and crashed, remounting in 38th.
Deegan had already moved up to a points position by the end Lap 1. He kept moving forward and was in the top 10 on Lap 2. Deegan found the top five on Lap 5 when he got around Justin Barcia and was in fourth on one lap later. He was 21 seconds behind Prado at the time and could not close the distance.
Ducati had a solid showing. Dylan Ferrandis and Barcia were in contention for a top-five for the entirety of the race. Ferrandis slipped around on Lap 7 and held the position until the checkers.
Barcia finished just outside that mark in sixth.
Triumph’s Jordon Smith finished eighth.
Seven manufacturers were represented in the top 10 with Honda finishing (Jett and Hunter) 1-2, KTM (Prado) third, Deegan’s Yamaha in fourth (Cooper Webb joined him in ninth), the Ducatis of Ferrandis and Barcia fifth and sixth, Husqvarna (RJ Hampshire) seventh, Triumph (Smith) in eighth, and Beta’s Benny Bloss in 10th.
For the first time in his 450 career, Eli Tomac failed to stand on the podium at Washougal. He got a bad start and was outside the points in 23rd on Lap 1. He moved up to 13th on Lap 4 and stalled there through at least Lap 11. Tomac was pushed back to 14th in the closing laps.
The third fastest qualifier, Garrett Marchbanks crashed on Lap 2 and retired in 39th.
