National media attention helps Joey Gase gain sponsors for Kansas
Thanks to some national media attention – including from NBC’s (and fellow Iowa native) Krista Voda – Joey Gase’s underdog story has resulted in additional and much needed funding.
Gase, who grew up in Cedar Rapids, has landed three new sponsors for his sixth Sprint Cup Series start in Saturday night’s SpongeBob SquarePants 400 at Kansas Speedway.
Gase’s career-best fifth-place finish in last Saturday’s Xfinity Series race at Talladega opened some eyes. And when stories about his life, including the death of his mother when he was 18, how he handles his own PR and sponsorship, and his car often races on used tires, Gase became a driver in demand.
Voda tweeted to her 140,000 followers, “I hope a co. steps up & sponsors Joey for @KansasSpeedway. Tons of Iowa fans there!”
In addition to more funding, Gase will have a developmental pit crew from Roush Fenway Racing in Saturday’s race; he typically uses a volunteer pit crew.
“There will definitely be a few more eyes on us this week than we would have other weeks, for sure,” Gase told the Des Moines Register.
