Free agent DE Antonio Smith will visit the Redskins before also making trips to St. Louis, Tennessee, and Oakland.
Washington gets the first crack at the 32-year-old. He can play in either a 3-4 or 4-3 defense but has spent the past five seasons in Houston’s 3-4 scheme as the right end. The Redskins could stand to upgrade over Stephen Bowen and Jarvis Jenkins. The Titans are implementing a 3-4.

    Raiders released DL Antonio Smith.
The move clears $4 million in cap space, which, of course, the Raiders don’t need. Going on 34, Smith was heading into the second season of a two-year deal. Smith started all 16 games last season, but was a nonentity. He generated just three sacks in 791 snaps, and struggled mightily against the run. Smith’s durability and scheme versatility — he played tackle in 2014, but has extensive experience at end — should earn him a market despite his age and underwhelming Oakland “tenure.” The Raiders’ 2014 free-agent class is shaping up as one of the worst of all time.

Broncos signed DL Antonio Smith, formerly of the Raiders, to a one-year, $2 million contract.
Smith appeared headed back to Houston, but instead will remain in the AFC West. A versatile talent along the defensive line who can still generate some pass-rushing heat, Smith should serve as a situational pass rusher for Gary Kubiak’s Broncos. Smith played for Kubiak in Houston. Smith played 791 snaps for the Raiders in 2014, a number that will likely be halved.

The Houston Chronicle reports the Texans are interested in a reunion with free agent DL Antonio Smith.
Cut loose by the Raiders on Tuesday, Smith spent 2009-13 with the Texans. DC Romeo Crennel reportedly wanted to re-sign Smith before he headed to Oakland on a two-year deal. A defensive tackle for the Raiders, Smith would likely be returning to end for the Texans.

Raiders signed DL Antonio Smith, formerly of the Texans, to a two-year, $9 million contract.
Smith racked up 27 sacks over the last five seasons playing right end in Houston’s 3-4 scheme, but may have to move inside in the Raiders’ base 4-3 defense. Even at 32, Smith is an above average interior pass rusher and, along with new additions LaMarr Woodley and Justin Tuck, should improve an Oakland pass-rushing unit that struggled to get to the quarterback in 2013.

ESPN’s Paul Gutierrez confirms the Raiders plan to use Antonio Smith at defensive tackle this season.
Smith was a 3-4 end with the Texans, but will move inside in Oakland’s base 4-3. The Raiders are expected to use Smith in a Lamarr Houston role, allowing him to focus on creating pressure as an interior pass rusher. Smith has 27 sacks over the last five seasons, but is a liability against the run.

Raiders DT Antonio Smith needed minor surgery following a recent weight room mishap.
The team did not provide any details on what the surgery entailed or exactly how Smith got hurt. All they said is that he’s “fine.” Smith will be an interior rusher for the Raiders’ revamped defensive line this season.

Raiders DT Antonio Smith (undisclosed surgery) isn’t participating in OTAs.
Smith is recovering from minor surgery after suffering a weight-room mishap earlier this month. It’s unclear when he’ll return, but all signs point toward Smith being ready for training camp.

Raiders DT Antonio Smith (undisclosed surgery) has been cleared for training camp.
Smith was injured in a May weight-room “mishap,” the extent of which the Raiders never revealed. He’ll start at defensive tackle this season.
  • Texans C Chris Myers and DE Antonio Smith have been added to the AFC’s Pro Bowl roster as injury replacements.
Myers replaced Maurkice Pouncey, and Smith replaces Patriots DE Andre Carter. It’s just as well. Myers outplayed Pouncey all season, finishing as Pro Football Focus’ top-rated center as the pivot for one of the league’s most dominant ground attacks. Smith was outstanding against the run in Wade Phillips’ 3-4 scheme.
