Swancutt had a shot to stick around, and must’ve shown very little during his short stay. Pickett became expendable with Daunte Culpepper’s addition.

The Raiders probably need another QB to take reps while JaMarcus Russell holds out. Pickett can also play wideout and cover kicks on special teams.

When Dilfer returns, the 49ers are going to use Pickett at receiver some.

Pickett has been practicing in the slot as a wide receiver. He’s willing to play whatever position will help his chances of making the team.

The seventh-round pick looks like a bargain so far, as the Niners love his height, attitude, and rifle arm. For now, he’s behind Ken Dorsey and Brandon Doman on the depth chart.

The only difference between Dorsey and Pickett was the extra INT provided by Pickett.

The Niners use Pickett at receiver during practice as well. “If we have another injury, we may have to park him back there at free safety,” coach Mike Nolan said. “I tell you he could do it. You look at him play wide receiver. He’s shagging balls. I hate to take him out of the quarterback mix.”

He was playing special teams for most of the day. Pickett was the team’s fourth quarterback only a few weeks ago. He completed a 10-yard pass on his only attempt and rushed twice for 12 yards in the 49ers victory.

Both Ken Dorsey and Alex Smith are doubtful for the game against the Giants. “The guys know him. They like him. They know what he stands for. He has strengths that are different from the other guys,” coach Mike Nolan said. Yeah, like special teams. Pickett was the team’s fourth quarterback only a few weeks ago, and was waived last year in place of Dorsey.

Asked about his likely starter Nolan said, “Did Cody get hurt?” Like each of the three quarterbacks who started before him this season, Pickett was unable to put together any sort of offensive attack.
