With Donovin Darius (knee) out, Deke Cooper moves into the Jaguars’ starting lineup at safety.
Darius could be out for the year if he has a torn ACL.

Restricted free agent safety Deke Cooper signed his one-year, $1.43 qualifying offer to stay with the Jaguars.
At that money, there is a good chance Cooper will start in 2005. That will require successfully trading disgruntled safety Donavin Darius, which they have been unable to do so far.

The Panthers will open the season with Deke Cooper and Chris Harris starting at the safety positions.
Marquand Manuel is expected to overtake Cooper eventually, but first must pick up a new scheme. This is likely to be a trouble spot for Carolina early on.

Panthers S Deke Cooper has been getting work with the starters early in training camp.
Mike Minter was on the bench. The Panthers reportedly could open the year with Cooper, a former NFL Europe retread, as their starting strong safety.

Panthers RBs DeAngelo Williams and Alex Haynes returned to practice Tuesday.
Williams was out with a stiff ankle. Haynes won’t have a spot on the team.

Panthers signed S C.J. Wilson off their practice squad.
The addition of Wilson, a seventh-round pick out of Baylor, leaves Carolina mostly inexperienced after injured FS Deke Cooper (shoulder). We suspect Marquand Manuel will get the nod if Cooper can’t go against Green Bay.
