49ers head coach Mike Nolan says the team’s starting weak inside linebacker position is “Derek (Smith’s) job to lose.”

“In third downs, it’s Patrick (Willis’) job to keep or lose,” Nolan continued. Willis reportedly is proving he has a lot to learn and hasn’t overtaken Smith yet. It’s still likely that the first-rounder will during the season, but he may not be an IDP stud initially.
