Texans signed CB Derek Stingley to a three-year, $90 million contract extension.
Stingley was selected No. 3 overall by the Texans in the 2022 NFL Draft and has quickly cemented himself as one of the league’s top corners. After being plagued by injuries in his first two years in the league, Stingley played in all 17 games for the Texans last season, totaling five interceptions and 18 pass breakups on his way to First-Team All-Pro and Pro Bowl honors. In 37 career games, Stingley has totaled 11 interceptions and 36 pass breakups and also forced three turnovers in two postseason games this past season. Stingley is now under contract through the 2029 season and will be eligible for free agency before his age-30 season.

Derek Stingley said he wants “to be here forever” when asked about a possible contract extension with the Texans.
A first-round pick of the Texans back in 2022, Stingley is officially eligible for a contract extension before the start of next season. Whether or not the Texans are in a rush to give him that long-term extension is another question, as the team could still pick up his fifth-year option for the 2026 season, allowing them to potentially put off the extension for at least one more year without complicating the situation. Stingley earned a PFF coverage grade of 74.9 this season while playing on a career-high 1,012 defensive snaps. He allowed 38 receptions for 394 yards and three touchdowns, per PFF, but also picked off five passes while breaking up another 10. The two sides will almost certainly reach an extension at some point in the near future, but whether that’s this offseason or the next is to be determined.
  • HOU Defensive Back #24
Texans activated CB Derek Stingley for Week 10 against the Bengals.
Stingley will see his first action since Week 2 and could see a lot of Ja’Marr Chase this weekend. His return is a welcomed one for the Texans, who are fresh off a back-and-forth matchup with the Buccaneers last week. The Texans declared S Jimmie Ward, TE Brevin Jordan, WR Nico Collins, RB Dameon Pierce, LB Jake Hansen, LB Henry To’oTo’o, and FB Andrew Beck inactive for Week 10.
  • HOU Defensive Back #24
Texans activated CB Derek Stingley (hamstring) from IR.
Stingley returns after practicing fully the last two days. The second-year corner was placed on IR in Week 2, missing seven games with a hamstring injury. Houston released OL Austin Deculus to clear a spot for Stingley.

Texans CB Derek Stingley (hamstring, IR) could be activated off IR for Week 10.
The Ravens opened Stingley’s 21-day practice window in Week 9. The second-year corner practiced fully the last two days, giving him a chance to return this week. Stingley, the No. 3 pick of the 2022 draft, is expected to be limited to base sets if active.
  • HOU Defensive Back #24
Texans CB Derek Stingley Jr. (hamstring) was designated for return from the IR.
The move opens up Stingley’s 21-day practice window, and he will practice on Wednesday for the first time since being placed on IR before Week 3. Through two weeks, the former LSU Tiger earned a 69.1 PFF coverage grade while allowing two catches for 63 yards on four targets. His eventual return will be a big boost to this Texans defense.
  • HOU Safety #5
Texans S Jalen Pitre (bruised lung) will not play in Week 3 against the Jaguars.
Pitre was injured in the Texans’ season opener against the Ravens and is now slated to miss his second-consecutive game. The start safety was replayed by M.J. Stewart and DeAndre Houston-Carson last week, as the two figure to both see action again this week. The Texans also ruled out LB Denzel Perryman (hand/wrist) and CB Derek Stingley (hamstring).

Texans beat writer Aaron Wilson said Derek Stingley “could miss several games” after injuring his hamstring in practice.
According to Wilson, it’s possible the Texans place Stingley on injured reserve, which would require him to sit out a minimum of four games. Stingley saw his 2022 come to an end late last season due to a hamstring injury, but we don’t have word on whether or not this is the same hamstring as last time. Through two weeks, the former LSU Tiger has earned a 69.1 PFF coverage grade while allowing two catches for 63 yards on four targets. The team may wait until Saturday’s deadline to decide whether or not to place him on injured reserve.

Texans placed CB Derek Stingley (hamstring) on injured reserve.
Stingley had been battling a hamstring injury since Week 11 and ultimately found himself on the injured reserve, ending his season. The battered Texans limp into a Week 15 matchup with the Chiefs with multiple key starters out.

  • HOU Cornerback #24
Texans CB Derek Stingley (hamstring) will not play in Week 15 vs Kansas City.
It’s the fifth straight missed game for Stingley, who hasn’t played since Week 10. The Texans will continue to start Desmond King and Tavierre Thomas with Stingley sidelined. Stingley hasn’t practiced in over a month and is unlikely to be back in Week 16. It’s possible the Texans shut him down for the season.
