The Texans have converted LB Derrell Smith to fullback.
A futures signee, Smith’s added versatility should increase his chances of making the roster. He may still need an injury to lock up a spot. For now, the Texans plan to start James Casey at fullback after losing Lawrence Vickers.

Texans signed KR Trindon Holliday, WR Juaquin Iglesias, DL Sunny Harris, LB Derrell Smith, C Cody Wallace, and DB Torri Williams to reserve/futures contracts.
Holliday doesn’t play receiver, so he’s a longshot for the 2012 roster even after Jacoby Jones’ miscues led in large part to the Texans’ season-ending loss. Iglesias was a final cut in Minnesota last September.

Bucs waived LB Derrell Smith and RB Mossis Madu.
Madu, undrafted out of Oklahoma, managed just 3.5 yards per carry but had five catches for 41 yards in the preseason. His versatility is intriguing, and the Bucs have practice squad interest. Smith was a bright spot during August as well. The team likes his potential as a reserve middle linebacker.
