The 49ers are working out undrafted rookie Jeremiah Masoli at running back in training camp.
Masoli was a running quarterback at Oregon and Ole Miss, though he’s exhibited a strong arm in early practices. Not to bag on the former No. 1 pick in the draft or anything, but beat writer Matt Barrows guesstimates that Alex Smith has the fourth-strongest arm in 49ers camp, behind Masoli, fellow undrafted rookie McLeod Bethel-Thompson, and obvious leader Colin Kaepernick.

49ers waived QB Jeremiah Masoli and K Fabrizio Scaccia.
Masoli, who worked at both tailback and quarterback in 49ers camp, seemed like a prime practice squad candidate. The fact that the Niners didn’t carry him even until the first round of cuts now makes that a long-shot possibility. Masoli didn’t outlast McLeod Bethel-Thompson. Scaccia was a camp leg.
