The Bengals’ leading special teams tackler, Jones had been dealing a knee injury since Week 8. Maxwell, who was with the Dolphins in the preseason, is a four-year vet who was has played 33 NFL games.

Brandon Johnson has been elevated to starting weak-side linebacker on the Bengals’ latest training camp depth chart.

Johnson, who Carson Palmer called the team’s MVP through the first week of camp, is ahead of Jim Maxwell and unsigned rookie Keith Rivers. This is a very tackle-friendly position. The winner could easily reach 100 stops.

Bengals released CB Deltha O’Neal, LB Jim Maxwell, TE Nate Lawrie, G Nate Livings, T Dane Uperesa, G James Blair, DE Angelo Craig, DLs Anthony Hoke and Dan Howell, and WRs Maurice Purify and Clyde Logan.

O’Neal, 31, was penciled in as Cincy’s primary punt returner but that job may now go to receiver Antonio Chatman. Craig was a seventh-round pick.
