“A lot of guys play with casts now and they do such a good job with it,” coach Dennis Erickson said. “We’ll know more about it as he practices with that cast and we see how effective he is.” Arnaz Battle will take over as the 49ers’ punt returner until Williams is hurt.

The 49ers secondary is probably the worst in the league right, on third-stringers. It’s a good week to start Brian Griese and Michael Clayton.

It’s an injury he might be able to play through. He’ll see a specialist to determine whether surgery will be required.

Ahmed Plummer and center Jeremy Newberry are also inactive. The 49ers are ridiculously thin in the secondary today.

San Francisco thought they’d get Williams back. The Rams should shred the 49ers secondary today.

He will be used mostly on special teams.

Krause spent 2007 with the Packers. Williams was out of the league while recovering from a torn ACL. They’re both likely roster filler for camp.

Wynn adds depth to a deep secondary and can play special teams. Williams’ knee woes have become chronic and may ultimately threaten his career.

He’ll backup Ahmed Plummer.

He’ll compete for a roster spot as a reserve cornerback and return man.
