Jonathan Hefney, who starred last year with the Winnipeg Blue Bombers, lined up opposite Louis Delmas as the Lions’ starting strong safety during Friday’s minicamp practice.
The pint-sized (5'9/185) Hefney earned all-CFL and Rookie of the Year honors with Winnipeg, but his presence next to Delmas speaks volumes about the Lions’ lack of options at strong safety. Hefney is a candidate to play situationally on passing downs, allowing C.C. Brown to concentrate on run defense. Despite his frame, Hefney was a smashing hitter at Tennessee.
  • FA Tight End #87
Lions signed TE Dan Gronkowski, DT Terrance Taylor, CB Jahi Word-Daniels, OG Kurt Quarterman, DE Robert Henderson, WRs Michael Ray Garvin and Kole Heckendorf and DBs Jonathan Hefney and Paul Pratt to reserve/futures contracts.
Gronkowski was a seventh-round pick who spent three weeks on the active roster in December. Taylor, the Colts’ fourth-round pick last season, floated around the league before landing in Detroit.
  • DET Defensive Back
Lions waived DB Jonathan Hefney, DT Rob Callaway, DT Landon Cohen, OG Noah Franklin, C Dan Gerberry, and OT Cliff Louis.
Hefney, CFL’s rookie of the year last season, ran with the first-team defense throughout OTAs. He lost out to Aaron Berry and newcomer Alphonso Smith. Cohen was a seventh-round pick last season.
