The Georgia product is lighter than fellow rookie Anthony Montgomery. It’s possible the two players are fighting for one roster spot on the veteran-heavy Redskins defense.

Golston appeared in nine games as a reserve last season, racking up 16 tackles and 1.5 sacks before landing on injured reserve with partial tears of two knee ligaments. He’ll have to compete hard to keep his roster spot this year.

Golston sustained a third-degree MCL tear and a partially torn ACL in the third quarter of Sunday’s loss to the Dolphins. It’s bad timing for the sixth-year pro as he’ll be an unrestricted free agent this spring. Golston’s season ends with 16 tackles, 1.5 sacks and a forced fumble.

Golston has been Washington’s No. 3 defensive end, playing behind Stephen Bowen and Adam Carriker. The loss shouldn’t be felt much barring a Bowen or Carriker injury. Kentwan Balmer may now step into Golston’s role.

Golston should be sidelined for at least the next few weeks, if not the rest of the season. Working as a rotational pass rusher, he’s notched 16 tackles, two sacks and a forced fumble. Kentwan Balmer will likely see the biggest increase in snaps in his absence.

Golston was a consistent member of the defensive line rotation before the injury. “I don’t even notice the knee at all. I feel as good as I’ve felt in a long time,” said Golston. “My elbows are feeling good, so I haven’t felt this healthy in probably three years.”

Golston, a rotational lineman, appeared in all 16 games for the Redskins last season, registering 16 tackles. The soon-to-be 30-year-old is a solid run defender, but he offers zero pass-rush ability.

He’s done for the day. Golston is the Redskins’ starting nose tackle.

He got hurt on the first play of Sunday’s loss to Dallas. Golston was originally diagnosed with a strained hamstring but obviously his MRI results revealed something more serious. Practice squad DL Matt Ioannidis will take his place on the active roster.

It is a new injury for Golston. Late additions to the injury report are never good, and it is possible Golston is more on the doubtful side for Monday night. With Kendall Reyes (groin) also questionable, the Redskins have questions on the defensive line.
