Beat writer Rich Cimini doesn’t buy that the Jets are completely sold on starting Vernon Gholston during Calvin Pace’s four-game suspension.
He calls third-year OLB Marques Murrell a possible alternative. “What was he supposed to say?” writes Cimini of Ryan’s support for Gholston, the 2008 No. 6 pick. “It would’ve been a bigger story if he DIDN’T name Gholston.”

Jets suspended S James Ihedigbo and OLB Marques Murrell one game for their roles in a Week 6 scuffle with Bills TE Derek Fine.
The Jets’ special teamers were also fined $5,000 apiece. They will not travel to Oakland. The losses will not affect the Jets’ defensive game planning.

Free agent LB Marques Murrell has a visit scheduled with the Denver Broncos.
The Jets didn’t tender Murrell an offer this offseason. He has appeared in 26 games in the NFL after going undrafted in 2007, making 17 special teams tackles and 21 tackles from the linebacker position.

Patriots agreed to terms with LB Marques Murrell on a two-year contract.
Originally a restricted free agent, Murrell failed to draw a tender offer from the Jets after three years as a backup pass rusher. He’ll play the same role with the Pats while pitching in on special teams.

The Patriots hosted free agent LB Marques Murrell on Monday.
Murrell has 3-4 experience, but showed little as a pass rusher in three years with the Jets after converting from college end to NFL outside linebacker.

The Jets failed to tender OLB Marques Murrell, WR Wallace Wright, and NT Howard Green, making them unrestricted free agents.
Murrell got the short end of the stick playing behind Vernon Gholston. For about three years we heard stories of Wright tearing up training camp and that he “might have an increased role” for the coming season, but it never happened. The Jets could sign these players back for minimum salaries.

    Patriots re-signed OLB Marques Murrell.
Murrell will play special teams in the postseason.
  • NE Linebacker
    Patriots waived LB Marques Murrell.
Reserve OL Quinn Ojinnaka was activated from the reserve/suspended list. Mostly a special teamer, Murrell didn’t show enough on defense to last long.
  • NE Linebacker
    Patriots released LB Marques Murrell.
Murrell has become a pure special teamer after failing to show anything as a pass rusher. He appeared in just one game for the Patriots a year ago. The Pats also waived undrafted rookie WR Jeremy Ross.
