He calls third-year OLB Marques Murrell a possible alternative. “What was he supposed to say?” writes Cimini of Ryan’s support for Gholston, the 2008 No. 6 pick. “It would’ve been a bigger story if he DIDN’T name Gholston.”

The Jets’ special teamers were also fined $5,000 apiece. They will not travel to Oakland. The losses will not affect the Jets’ defensive game planning.

The Jets didn’t tender Murrell an offer this offseason. He has appeared in 26 games in the NFL after going undrafted in 2007, making 17 special teams tackles and 21 tackles from the linebacker position.

Originally a restricted free agent, Murrell failed to draw a tender offer from the Jets after three years as a backup pass rusher. He’ll play the same role with the Pats while pitching in on special teams.

Murrell has 3-4 experience, but showed little as a pass rusher in three years with the Jets after converting from college end to NFL outside linebacker.

Murrell got the short end of the stick playing behind Vernon Gholston. For about three years we heard stories of Wright tearing up training camp and that he “might have an increased role” for the coming season, but it never happened. The Jets could sign these players back for minimum salaries.

Murrell will play special teams in the postseason.

Reserve OL Quinn Ojinnaka was activated from the reserve/suspended list. Mostly a special teamer, Murrell didn’t show enough on defense to last long.

Murrell has become a pure special teamer after failing to show anything as a pass rusher. He appeared in just one game for the Patriots a year ago. The Pats also waived undrafted rookie WR Jeremy Ross.
