He was drafted in the second round by Arizona in 2001 and was cut by the Rams this preseason. He can play both safety and cornerback, which appeals to the Patriots.

He suffered a hip injury near the end of training camp that basically ensured rookie Michael Johnson’s roster spot. Stone now becomes a free agent.

Bell suffered a back injury during an off-season conditioning program and is now out for the season. He played 15 games for the Giants last season behind Gibril Wilson. Michael Stone was signed as a free agent and could get first crack at taking Bell’s slot.

Stone’s spot is now likely to go to Michael Johnson or J.R. Reed. With third S Will Demps injured, the winner could see playing time during the first week or two. The team also released rookie WR Marco Thomas and signed LB Karibi Dede.

Stone played spot duty with New England in 2005. He’s primarily a special teamer.

The former Patriots player will help on special teams.

The journeyman had one tackle as a Texan in 2006.
