49ers selected Ball State QB Nate Davis with the No. 171 overall pick in the NFL Draft.
Davis had Ball State undefeated for much of 2008, but he fell apart in the last two games and had a forgettable offseason, testing 11 on the Wonderlic and running a 4.97 at the Combine. Only one team -- the Colts -- showed to his Pro Day. Davis is probably a practice squad candidate in San Fran.

49ers coach Mike Singletary confirmed in an NFL Network interview that fifth-round pick Nate Davis has dyslexia.
Singletary called Davis’ learning disability “common knowledge.” This almost entirely explains his poor Wonderlic score. It remains to be seen if it will hinder Davis’ ability to learn an NFL playbook. He seemed to pretty much have free reign as an improvisational gunslinger at Ball State.
  • IND Quarterback
Fifth-round pick Nate Davis has not taken a practice rep in 49ers team drills since seeing a “handful” at rookie minicamp in May.
The Niners are smartly not wasting valuable reps on a project passer. Davis has better natural all-around gifts than Shaun Hill or Alex Smith, but he’s at least a year away from being ready. He’s a candidate for the practice squad.
  • IND Quarterback
49ers signed fifth-round QB Nate Davis to a four-year contract, including a $150,300 signing bonus.
Davis, a developmental project from Ball State, is going to have to make an impression this summer if the Niners are going to carry him over third quarterback Damon Huard. The practice squad is a more likely scenario. Davis has a learning disability to overcome to have a future in the league.
  • IND Quarterback
Ball State QB Nate Davis scored an 11 on the Wonderlic Test.
Davis has a learning disability, but his intelligence remains a big concern. "(Davis) has a (Josh) Freeman arm and he was more accurate than Freeman,” said one Redskins scout. “I mean, he can throw it. But it will be a different learning process with him that some offensive coordinator is going to have to adjust to if he’s going to play for you.”
  • SF Quarterback
Damon Huard is locked in as the 49ers third quarterback, according to coach Mike Singletary.
Huard won’t be getting many reps in training camp and has no chance to win the starting job. It will be interesting to see if the team tries to sneak fifth-rounder Nate Davis onto the practice squad.
  • IND Quarterback
Ball State QB Nate Davis has made pre-draft visits to the Jets and 49ers, and will visit the Steelers this week.
Only one team (the nearby Colts) showed up to Davis’ Pro Day, but it appears he’s still generating some interest. He remains in danger of going undrafted.
  • IND Quarterback
NFL Network’s Mike Mayock revealed in a conference call with reporters Wednesday that he’s heard Ball State QB Nate Davis has a learning disability.
This would be less concerning if Davis played any other position. “It has nothing to do with his intelligence, just whether he can learn,” Mayock said. He also noted Davis’ shaky accuracy and horrible finish to the 2008 season.
  • IND Quarterback
49ers fifth-round QB Nate Davis said it took him about a year and a half to learn the nuances of the Ball State offense.
At the risk of piling on, this does suggest that Davis won’t see the field for a year or maybe two. He’s more of a developmental project as opposed to a threat to Shaun Hill’s starting job.
  • IND Quarterback
Rookie Nate Davis completed 10-of-15 passes for 132 yards on Saturday in Dallas.
Davis led the Niners down the field on their game-winning touchdown drive in the fourth quarter. He is making his case to be the No. 3 QB ahead of Damon Huard, whom Mike Singletary said, during summer, would be his third quarterback. It will be interesting to see what they do with Nate.
