Chiefs head coach Andy Reid shared a positive update on the condition of offensive coordinator Eric Bieniemy’s wife Mia on Wednesday.
Mia Bieniemy was shot multiple times at the family’s home in Virginia on Sunday and was admitted to the intensive care unit at a local hospital as a result of her injuries. The couple’s son was arrested and charged with multiple crimes as a result of the shooting.
“She’s doing great,” Reid said, via Nate Taylor of ESPN.com. “She’s doing better and great from where she was. [She’s] out of the ICU unit and making progress, so we’re happy about that.”
Eric Bieniemy has been away from the team since the incident and Reid said it’s not known when he might return.
“Eric’s a big part of this,” Reid said. “We love having him here, but it’s important that he takes care of business and everybody knows that. Eric will be back soon enough to jump in there and do his thing, but he’s got to take care of that first.”
Passing game coordinator Joe Bleymaier is handling the offensive coordinator duties in Bieniemy’s absence.

Defensive end Ethan Downs’s bid to make the Chiefs has come to an early end.
Matt Derrick of ChiefsDigest.com reports that Downs tore his ACL during a workout. The Chiefs had rookies and a handful of other players working out ahead of the official start of training camp this week.
Downs signed to the Chiefs’ practice squad last August and he appeared in one game for the team during the regular season. Downs had five tackles and a forced fumble while seeing action on both defense and special teams.
The injury will keep Downs out for the entire season and the team will likely add another player to the roster once Downs is placed on injured reserve.
The Chiefs were targeting former Oklahoma defensive end R Mason Thomas as a high priority with their second-round draft pick, and they didn’t want anyone to know. Including Thomas.
Thomas, who went to Kansas City with the 40th overall pick in April, says he was shocked when his phone rang during the second round and it was the Chiefs, talking to him for the first time since a meeting at the Scouting Combine two months earlier.
“I would’ve never known a Kansas City, Missouri, area code would call my phone on draft day. They didn’t really talk as much,” Thomas said. “I had a formal meeting with them, and that was the first meeting of the Combine. After that we didn’t talk. So I guess they’re low-key. They like to keep it quiet.”
Some teams like to bring in the players they’re interested in drafting for meetings at the team facility to get to know them better. Other teams view those meetings as a way for other teams to identify the players they want and perhaps move up ahead of them in the draft. The Chiefs decided not to let anyone know Thomas was their guy, until they let Thomas know when they were on the clock.

Eric Bieniemy has departed the team to be with his wife in Virginia. Reid said there is currently no timetable for Bieniemy’s return.
“Our hearts go out to Eric Bieniemy,” Reid said, via Nate Taylor of ESPN. “Mia is stable, which is a plus. ... We all love EB and you hate seeing those things happen. ... Real life. You take care of that. She’s a saint, one of God’s good blessings. But things happen.”
While Bieniemy is away from the team, pass game coordinator Joe Bleymaier will handle the offensive coordinator duties.
Bleymaier has been with the Chiefs since 2016 and has served in his current role since 2023.
Bieniemy’s son, Elijah, was arrested and charged in the shooting. Elijah Bieniemy is being held without bond and the investigation is ongoing.
More details are emerging in connection with the news that the wife of Chiefs offensive coordinator Eric Bieniemy was shot in their Virginia home.
The Loudon County, Virginia, sheriff’s office has announced that Bieniemy’s son, Elijah, was “arrested and charged with Malicious Wounding, Use of a Firearm in Commission of a Felony, and Discharge of a Firearm Inside of a Dwelling.”
Mia Biemieny was shot multiple times, and she suffered “serious injuries.”
Elijah Bieniemy is being held without bond. The investigation, per the sheriff’s office, is ongoing.
Eric Bieniemy returned to the Chiefs as offensive coordinator in 2026. He previously held the job from 2018 through 2022. Since then, he worked as offensive coordinator of the Commanders in 2023, offensive coordinator at UCLA in 2024, and running backs coach for the Bears in 2025.

Nate Taylor of ESPN reports, citing unnamed sources, Mia Bieniemy has been hospitalized following the incident. Taylor adds that police in Loudoun County, Virginia, have confirmed a person was being treated for “serious injuries.” The authorities did not disclose the victim’s identity.
Eric Bieniemy is in Missouri, for Chiefs training camp.
Via Taylor, the Chiefs said in a statement they are “aware of the incident involving Eric Bieniemy’s family.” The Chiefs released no other details.
Bieniemy returned to the Chiefs as offensive coordinator in 2026. He had served in that role from 2018 through 2022.
Chiefs rookie cornerback Mansoor Delane wore a yellow non-contact jersey at his first training camp practice as a result of the shoulder injury he suffered during the offseason. But he says he’ll be fully cleared “some time soon, for sure.”
“It’s good, just getting better every day. Biggest thing right now is just getting my feet under me, acclimating to the conditioning,” Delane said.
Delane spent time studying the playbook and doing the conditioning he can while his shoulder healed. He acknowledged that the shoulder injury was a result of going too hard during Organized Team Activities but said he understands that in training camp he needs to dial it down, and save the big hits for the regular season.
“That’s something that’s going to be hard for me to turn down, my aggression, but you’ve got to be smart. In the NFL, you’ve got to protect your teammates. That’s the most important thing,” Delane said.
The Chiefs traded up to the sixth overall pick to draft Delane because they think he’s going to dial it up in a big way when the season starts.
Chiefs quarterback Patrick Mahomes and wide receiver Rashee Rice are cleared to participate in the opening of training camp. Rookie tight end John Michael Gyllenborg and second-year defensive tackle Omarr Norman-Lott are not.
Gyllenborg and Norman-Lott were placed on the active/physically unable to perform list on Saturday.
The players can move back onto the 90-player roster once they have passed a physical.
Norman-Lott tore the ACL in his right knee during a Week 7 game against the Raiders last season. He joined the team as a second-round pick in 2025
In five games as a rookie, Norman-Lott made five tackles and a sack.
Gyllenborg, who signed with the Chiefs as an undrafted free agent earlier this year, is working through a knee sprain that kept him out of the offseason program.
Jordan Devey, who played for five NFL teams over eight years, has died. He was 38.
Via Jeremy Tombs of Fox 13 in Salt Lake City, Devey died by suicide. His parents told Tombs that they believe Devey suffered from CTE.
Undrafted in 2013 out of Memphis, Devey initially signed with the Ravens but was released. He landed on the Patriots’ roster in 2013 and 2014, winning a Super Bowl ring to cap his second year in New England.
Devey spent 2015 with the 49ers, 2016 through 2018 with the Chiefs, 2019 with the Raiders, and 2020 with the Bills. He appeared in 44 regular-season games with 21 starts.

The Chiefs traded first-, third- and fifth-round picks to move up and draft cornerback Mansoor Delane sixth overall, so when he was knocked out of Organized Team Activities with a shoulder injury, it was a concern. But it doesn’t sound like a big concern going forward.
Chiefs coach Andy Reid addressed reporters on Friday as the team reported to training camp, and he said Delane was in the process of getting medical clearance to practice.
“Delane right now is having his final physical. Right now. So he’s right in the process of that and is doing well there,” Reid said.
The precise details of how Delane suffered the injury are not known, but Reid indicated it was a matter of going too hard during offseason work.
“We like the way he goes about his business,” Reid said. “He’s a focused kid, he seems to be a smart, sharp kid. He’s willing to work. He was banged up a little bit but he’s willing to work. He’s aggressive that way — too aggressive in the way he hurt himself there. You’ve got a good player and he’s got to get in and go and get the reps in the defensive scheme.”
The Chiefs expect Delane to get plenty of reps in training camp, and they hope he’s ready to make an immediate impact in Week One.
